documentaries by YOUNG filmmakers)

April 2009
Jawaharlal Nehru University,
New Delhi, India.

The previous editions of Cinemela festival received overwhelming
response from all quarters and the Limca Book of World Records
has recognized the festival for its uniqueness. The festival
intends to take the films created by young artists to the young
audience and is an effort to make a space for the new creative
voices from all over the world which is denied by the crude logic
of media industry. We believe that these woks deserve attention
for their ability to go beyond local issues and provincial tastes
while simultaneously opening up a window onto a diverse
culture. Cinemela is designed to serve as a glass through which
audience may have an opportunity to glimpse important aspects
of rapidly emerging creative sensibilities which are all set to
conquer the future. Keeping this in view, we plan to take the
selected films from the festival to other campuses and places.

The young films, despite the diverse styles and subjects, tell
something about the cultures from which they spring, and have
the capability to make an impression with their individuality. The
festival aspires to provide an ideal opportunity to enjoy the
pleasure of regional distinctiveness through films and rejoice in
their universal appeal. With the images and sounds of these
films, we learn about other portions of the world and witness the
ascendancy of new artists to creative acclaim.

All are invited to be submerged in an experience of dissimilarity,
to be lost in strange spheres, to perceive unfamiliar languages,
to observe unusual styles, to discover new voices and visions.
The festival also provides a platform where interactions among
veteran film persons, young filmmakers, audience and others can
be possible in informal manner. This aims to satisfy our curiosity,
assuage our suspicion, arouse our sympathies, and heighten our
appreciation. We are hopeful that an inevitable degree of
knowing calculation will enter into the experience on both sides.

We invite the cine-lovers to visit an arena where
the future of cinema is taking shape.

Prakash Kumar Ray
Festival Convenor

(0) 9873313315/ cinemela@gmail.com

www.cinemela.blogspot.com
(Details of previous festivals are also there)

4th edition of

CINEMELA
a festival of short films & documentaries
by
YOUNG filmmakers

April 2008
Jawaharlal Nehru University
New Delhi

Entries should reach on or before 20 March, 2009.
Format –only DVD (two copies of each entry)
Films must be sub-titled in English
Enclose a brief synopsis of the film/s, CV of the filmmaker with photograph, details of crew and a declaration of participation (all documents should be in A4 paper size).

Filmmakers are requested to send a short note on “Why I make films” and some stills, posters and publicity material (not mandatory).

No bar on numbers of entries and length or theme of the films.
Films can be experimental, animation, musical, in fact, anything.

There is NO ENTRY FEE

All are requested to contribute generously since the festival does not accept any corporate or commercial sponsorship. (list given below)

14 May 2008 will mark one year of imprisonment for Dr Binayak Sen, the well-known public health and civil rights activist, arrested on false charges of ‘assisting’ the Maoist insurgency in Chattisgarh.

In a nation where increasingly the medical profession is becoming synonymous with unbridled commercial greed Dr Sen dedicated his entire professional life to the free service of people in the remotest villages.

In a country, which has health indicators worse than that of sub-Saharan Africa, Dr Sen passionately worked for setting up low cost models of healthcare accessible to the poor.

And in a land where the problems of public health are deeply intertwined with the gross violations of the Indian Constitution by state agencies themselves Dr Sen fought for ensuring democratic rights of ordinary people.

Dr Sen’s detention as a ‘threat to national security’ stands therefore as a challenge to every Indian who aspires for a humane, democratic and civilized India.

To mark the first anniversary of the arrest of Dr Sen, on 14 May 2008 and to call for his immediate release the Free Binayak Sen Film Festival is being organised by concerned citizens and groups around the country. The package of 10 documentaries, presented in this Festival, highlight the issues of human rights and public health and deal with themes ranging from nutrition, greed of drug companies, environmental pollution and state atrocities.

They are meant to make all those who watch them wake up and more importantly resist the Silent Emergency that is creeping upon us in front of our very eyes.

***************************************

Films

1. Secrets and Lies

Stavros Stagos

This Greek documentary explores how the Bhopal chemical disaster of 1984, which claimed as many as 20,000 lives, continues to affect people today. Points an accusing finger mostly at Union Carbide, the multinational pesticide manufacturer that owned the Bhopal plant. The company is currently part of Dow Chemical (makers of Agent Orange) which now denies all legal responsibility for the disaster.

6. The Bitter Drink

P. Baburaj & C. Saratchandran

Chronicles the struggle of the most marginalised section of the Indian society, the tribal community, against the mighty global giant Coca Cola. It also discusses the issue of the ownership of natural resources, mainly water.

7. Resilient Rhythms

Gopal Menon

India’s caste system places nearly 160 million people, the dalits, at the outskirts of society. It exploits their services, especially to perform ”polluting” tasks, such as cutting the umbilical cord, disposing of night-soil, tending cremation grounds, but at the same time denies them acceptance as human beings. Resilient Rhythms deals with a range of dalit responses to their marginalization, from armed struggle to electoral politics.

All groups interested in receiving the package of films for organizing the Free Binayak Sen Film Festival in their areas of work are requested to send the name of their organization, postal address and tentative date of screening to - Wilfred D’Souza, INSAF, New Delhi, insaf@vsnl.com, Ph: 09825171919. The police firing in Nandigram on 14th March 2007 has disturbed peace-loving democratic minded people in West Bengal and elsewhere in the country. The Left Front Government in West Bengal has come under intense political attack on the issue from the entire spectrum of political opposition, from the ultra-Right to the ultra-Left. The truth of course was lost in the din of shrill anti-Left propaganda. By revisiting the police firing on 14th March 2007, the sequence of events which led to it as well as its aftermath, the film portrays the tragedy as it unfolded. The film has Hindi sub-titles and voice-over. The English version is also ready.
contact: leftview@gmail.com
phone: (0)99 99 300 914

Although commercial film festivals have always been attractive tocinemagoers, new initiatives to exhibit small, meaningful and non-commercial cinema do have a sizeable audience. Proving this fact yet again, the second edition of "Cinemela", a 4-day festival of short films & documentaries by young filmmakers, opened to a packed audience on 12 April at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Organised by the Cinemela Collectives and JNU Students Union School ofArts and Aesthetics, in collaboration with Max Muller Bhavan, Cinemela ran from 12 to 15 April. The Limca Book of World Records recognizedCinemela's very first edition last year for its uniqueness andparticipation.

Inaugurating the festival, Aruna Vasudev, founder, Osian's Cinefan, appreciated Cinemela for the opportunity it gives to young filmmakers to showcase their work. Senior journalist Paranjoy G. Thakurta also agreed. "The profit-mongering mainstream media culture has to be resisted with more and more events like Cinemela," he said. Prof.Parul Mukherjee, Dean of School of Arts and Aesthetics, JNU, described it as a successful effort in building bridges between the academics and practices in Art.

To underscore its range and plurality, two films from two distinctworlds and realities were screened on the opening day. Gadi LohardagaMail, a film by Meghnad and Biju Toppo is the only visual documentation on a historic train in Jharkhand, while Ester Amrami'sBerlin Diary captures the life of a young Israeli woman in Berlin."Cinemela intends to take films created by young artists to youngaudience, besides making efforts to create a space for the newcreative voices from all over the world which is denied by the crudelogic of media industry. The festival aims at presenting films created by young filmmakers to young audiences and is an effort to create a space for new creative voices from across countries. The festival aspires to provide an ideal opportunity to enjoy regional distinctiveness through films in their universal appeal. It also provides a platform for interactions and exchange among veteran film persons, young filmmakers and audiences. With this aim in view Cinemela is working on taking these films to many more schools, colleges and institutions. All young filmmakers and those who consider themselves young in the field are encouraged to send in their films to the festival.

Max Mueller Bhavan, Goethe-Institut, as part of the 2nd Cinemela, presents a series of prize winning short films by young film makers, titled ‘Gestures of Reconciliation’. The first Cinemela festival last year received overwhelming response from all quarters and it has been recognized by the Limca Book of World Records for its uniqueness. The festival intends to take the films created by young artists to the young audience and is an effort to make a space for the new creative voices from all over the world which is denied by the crude logic of media industry. We believe that these woks deserve attention for their ability to go beyond local issues and provincial tastes while simultaneously opening up a window onto a diverse culture. Cinemela is designed to serve as a glass through which audience may have an opportunity to glimpse important aspects of rapidly emerging creative sensibilities which are all set to conquer the future. Keeping this in view, we plan to take the selected films from the festival to other campuses and places.

The young films, despite the diverse styles and subjects, tell something about the cultures from which they spring, and have the capability to make an impression with their individuality. The festival aspires to provide an ideal opportunity to enjoy the pleasure of regional distinctiveness through films and rejoice in their universal appeal. With the images and sounds of these films, we learn about other portions of the world and witness the ascendancy of new artists to creative acclaim.

All are invited to be submerged in an experience of dissimilarity, to be lost in strange spheres, to perceive unfamiliar languages, to observe unusual styles, to discover new voices and visions.
The festival also provides a platform where interactions among veteran film persons, young filmmakers, audience and others can be possible in informal manner. This aims to satisfy our curiosity, assuage our suspicion, arouse our sympathies, and heighten our appreciation. We are hopeful that an inevitable degree of knowing calculation will enter into the experience on both sides.

We invite the young filmmakers and those who consider themselves young in the field and the spirit to send their film to the festival. We also invite the cine-lovers to visit an arena where the future of cinema is taking shape.

In solidarity,
Prakash Kumar Ray
Convenor, Cinemela Collectives.
(0)9811450214
cinemela@gmail.com, pkray11@gmail.com
http://www.cinemela.blogspot.com
http://www.cinemela.org(under construction)

2nd
CINEMELA
a festival of short films & documentaries
by
YOUNG filmmakers and those who consider themselves YOUNG
14-18 march 2007 JNU New Delhi

Last Date to send entries – 7 March, 2007
Format – DV, DVD or VCD (two copies of each entry)
Enclose a brief synopsis, CV, details of crew and a declaration of participation.

There is NO ENTRY FEE

All are requested to contribute generously since the festival does not accept any corporate or commercial sponsorship.
